Providing Ethernet Test Solutions from Turn-Up to Service Management

JDSU offers instruments, systems, software, services, and integrated solutions that help communications services providers, equipment manufacturers, and major communications users maintain their competitive advantage at each stage of the network lifecycle.

Installation and Turn-Up: For installation and turn-up in the field, the FST-2802 TestPad allows technicians to quickly and efficiently turn-up 10/100/1000Mbps based Ethernet links. A handheld test platform used by field technicians worldwide and standardized by most U.S. service providers, the FST-2802 verifies end-to-end connectivity and throughput of Ethernet, frame relay, ATM and IP services from a variety of network access points. Other modules for the TestPad enable efficient turn up and troubleshooting of DS0-to-OC-192 services in access and optical transport networks, and provides RF and GSM monitoring of wireless networks.

Network Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Designed to reduce mean time to repair by shortening mean time to understand problems, the DA-3400 Data Network Analyzer with Ethernet allows technicians with limited data experience to locate and solve problems effectively. Consisting of a test device with interface modules and client software for direct or remote control, the DA-3400 identifies complex problems caused at the Ethernet, VLAN, IP or application layers. ATM analysis software also is available for speeds from 1.5 Mbit/s to 622 Mbit/s.

The DA-3400 automates compilation and filtering of decodes, provides detailed line rate statistics for each flow, and provides upper-layer analysis that allows users to see, in real-time, all traffic on high-speed links. A scalable solution, the DA-3400 allows technicians to easily connect to all other DA-3400 test devices throughout the network. The DA-3400 also enables integration into NOC-based operations support systems (OSS) that include the NetAnalyst Test Manager software.

Centralized Monitoring: The JDSU Data Test System brings a remote troubleshooting solution to market for Ethernet networks. This NOC-based, highly scalable system combines centralized test hardware and software to automate end-to-end data network management. NetAnalyst Test Management Software allows remote operation of JDSU data test devices for real-time expert analysis and provides a complete view of physical, network and IP-related problems. The JDSU Data Test System provides real-time troubleshooting and analysis for locating service-impacting problems between the physical layer, packet network layers and the customer's traffic on frame relay and ATM networks.

Benefits of Ethernet

  • Already deployed in most LAN environments, Ethernet holds a wide variety of benefits for both users and service providers.
  • For users, it can provide greater available bandwidth for current applications, such as streaming media, while holding promise for future applications, such as data storage and recovery. In addition, Ethernet offers enhanced security via virtual LANs (VLANs).
  • For service providers, Ethernet technology enables economical network expansion via existing SONET/SDH equipment and ATM networks. Ethernet also is generally stable, as well as scalable and flexible, accommodating interoperability across various packet-based networks.

Challenges to Deployment

As Ethernet technology becomes more widespread, service providers must cost effectively deploy and maintain Ethernet services and networks. To achieve and maintain profitability, they must:

  • Decrease mean time to revenue
  • Roll out new services more quickly
  • Reduce mean time to solve problems
  • Ensure quality of service

Points of distinction include:

  • First company to offer a data analyzer that can be used as both a portable analysis device and as an integrated element of a carrier-class OSS.
  • Uniquely offers solutions ranging from handheld field testers to a full carrier-scale solution.
  • Simplifies and streamlines data traffic analysis from a multi-step approach to a one-step, time saving solution.
  • Service provider track record with a customer base including Sprint, BellSouth, WorldCom, Nortel, Cisco, Lucent, Alcatel, IBM, Ericsson, British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and Korea Telecom.
  • First to market with testers for real-time analysis of IP traffic at 2.5 Gbit/s.
