T-BERD/MTS-8000 Transport Module

Reaching new heights in 10GigE WAN and IP layer and triple-play service testing

T-BERD/MTS-8000 An industry-wide response to the demand for more bandwidth and IP-based triple-play services has been to extend Ethernet from the LAN into the WAN. In addition to this initiative, there is a growing movement to build more functions and intelligence into network equipment. For example, as new service offerings arise, MSPPs are combining data and transport technologies on the same line cards so that providers have the flexibility to configure new services quickly in support of customer demand.

The pace that service providers can integrate new equipment, technologies, and services can be hindered by the reality of the vast range of networks in existence. According to LightReading, “As the market for wide-area Ethernet services continues to take shape, service providers will resort to a variety of solutions using a combination of standing network infrastructure, leased access, and new connections…”

JDSU’s new T-BERD/MTS-8000 Transport Module is the first integrated SONET/SDH, Ethernet, and IP test solution for the cost-efficient installation and maintenance of network elements and services. It addresses all these network types by combining Ethernet, IP, SDH/SONET, T-carrier, and PDH test functions into a single instrument that weighs less than 7 kg/15 lbs, the lightest in the industry. Aligned with service providers’ need to test Ethernet, the Transport Module supports 10/100/GigE and 10GigE LAN/WAN Ethernet interfaces; optical wavelengths are supported at 850, 1310, and 1550 nm.

IEEE defines the two 10GigE interfaces as follows:

10GigE LAN PHY (10GBASE-R) interfaces achieve a 10.3125 G line rate—a 10-fold performance improvement when compared to Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Moreover, 10 GigE is positioned to revolutionize network architectures by providing eight times the cost efficiency over existing 10 Gig SDH/SONET interfaces.

10GigE WAN PHY (10GBASE-W) offers an Ethernet interface that is compatible with the existing SONET/SDH network and adaptable to the growing Ethernet market, allowing providers to manage Ethernet services in their already existing SONET/SDH networks. The 10GigE WAN standard uses a concatenated STM-64/OC-192 signal operating at 9.9Gb/s with a SDH or SONET framing structure. Standard Ethernet frames are mapped directly into the payload of the SDH frame using a WAN interface sublayer (WIS). Because SONET/SDH framing is used, users can sectionalize their Ethernet services (Regenerator/Section, Multiplexer/Line and Path layers).

The installation and maintenance of new Ethernet network elements, optical technologies, and IP-based services impose new test requirements such as measuring throughput, utilization, frame loss, and round-trip delay. The Transport Module performs each of these functions as well as measures BER and verifies 10 GigE LAN PHY and WAN PHY connectivity for Ethernet and IP services.

Because the Transport Module tests multiple technologies, users do not have to carry and manage multiple technology-specific modules or bulky mainframes in the field. Complementing transport testing, the T-BERD/MTS-8000’s other modules can be used to confirm that optical span criteria are met by testing link specifications such as attenuation, fiber loss, span distances, and dispersion parameters.

The T-BERD/MTS-8000’s scalable platform provides an all-in-one tool for installing and maintaining short-haul, long-haul, FTTx, metro, CWDM, transport, data, and DWDM networks. In addition, it has set an industry standard for easy integration of existing and future technologies.
