Shadow TAP (Discontinued)

The Shadow TAP 10/100 is a single-port tap device for viewing traffic on a full-duplex or half-duplex 10/100 UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) Ethernet segment on intrusion detection systems (IDS), protocol analyzers, network monitoring devices, etc.

Typically, the Shadow TAP 10/100 is deployed on a critical link in a network where direct network monitoring and analysis capabilities are important.

The Shadow TAP 10/100 automatically propagates inline power applied through any attached 10/100 network segment. You can apply power from a switching device or via mid-point insertion. Propagation of inline power is performed in accordance with the IEEE 802.3af industry standard for applying power to data terminal equipment (DTE) via an media-dependent interface (MDI).

The Shadow TAP 10/100 has the following features:

  • Zero network downtime; loss of power to the TAP will not cause a network failure.
  • Power over Ethernet
    • Compatible with switches and other devices that supply Power over Ethernet cables.
    • Compatible with voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones and other devices that require power over Ethernet.
    • LEDs that indicate on which signal pairs the power over Ethernet is activated.
    • Option to support future power over Ethernet deployment if you do not currently have a power over Ethernet network in place.
  • Electro-optical relays as opposed to electro-mechanical relays.
    • Electro-optical relays have faster response times by about a factor of 10.
    • Typical turn-on time of 0.3ms, while electro-mechanical relays are commonly 3 - 4 ms.
    • Electro-optical relays help isolate the TAP Ports from the Network Ports during power failure.
  • Hot-swappable, redundant power supplies provide uninterrupted monitoring.
  • Front panel connectors provide easy access.
  • Power LEDs on the front and back panel provide power status.
  • Passive 10/100 Mbps access allows:
    • Monitoring without interfering with the data stream. The TAP does not add any delay to network traffic.
    • Traffic from all network layers to pass through
    • Full and half-duplex monitoring
