ODU0 and ODUFlex Test Capabilities Added to JDSU ONT Test Solution
JDSU has added ODU0 and ODUFlex testing capabilities to the ONT test solution providing the most comprehensive optical transport network (OTN) feature set on the market with interfaces from OTU1 (2.7G) to OTU4 (111.8G). See also JDSU Adds Optical Transport Network Capabilities to 100GE Test Suite.
These new enhancements allow for implementation of a true new two-layer network approach with a packet layer based on Ethernet/IP and a transport layer based on OTN. Leveraging the strengths of OTN, such as OTN multiplexing and its operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) capabilities, JDSU is poised to unveil its next phase of OTN features.
JDSU ODU0 and ODUFlex ONT test highlights include:
- the first 2.7G and 10.7G test solutions capable of testing both ODU0 and ODUFlex technologies that are necessary for transporting Ethernet in Core Networks.
- ODU0 which makes current OTN networks compatible with a fast transparent Ethernet service while ODUFlex helps networks seamlessly scale to adjust to transporting different types of services and accommodating different bandwidth needs.
- single stage (rates include ODU0 and OTU2) and dual stage (rates include ODU0, ODU1 and OTU2) offerings to meet the standards of today and tomorrow and the migration path to get there.
The new features allow engineers from development, system verification, and production to test these new structures for function and performance. From a topology view, testing the internal network element functions, such as OTN multiplexing and service mapping, is also among the services available inside the ODU structures.
Since 2001 when the ITU first approved OTN technology, it has developed into a real network technology. Initially focused on point-to-point connections for synchronous digital hierarchy/synchronous optical network (SDH/SONET) applications, its rapid evolution with the new version of ITU-T G.709 approved in December 2009 defines multiple new enhancements, such as OTU4, to enable 100G Ethernet support. Also defining enhancements such as ODU0, ODUFlex, and Generic Mapping Procedure (GMP) enables OTN to serve as a transport technology for various data services including Ethernet and Fibre Channel without intermediate layers, such as SDH/SONET.
