SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, January 23, 2006 – JDSU, a leading provider of high precision optical solutions for industrial applications, is showcasing new lasers, thin film optical coatings, and its exclusive Photonic Power technology at Photonics West, the world’s largest optics and photonics event, January 21 – 26 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California. JDSU invites press and attendees to visit booth number 1621 in Hall 3 for an up-to-the-minute preview of its latest innovations. Additionally, JDSU personnel are presenting four important talks in conjunction with the show:

Phillip Meredith, vice president of JDSU’s Laser Products Group, will provide a keynote address on “Value Added Manufacturing in the Laser Industry” at the Lasers & Photonics Marketplace, sponsored by Laser Focus World magazine. Meredith’s address takes place on Monday, January 23 at 11:15 a.m. PST at the Fairmont Hotel.

Victor Rossin, development engineering manager, will deliver a talk entitled “Highly Reliable High-Power Broad Area Laser Diodes” on Monday, January 23 at 2 p.m. PST (Session 2). Rossin and his team will report results of multi-cell life tests performed on nearly 500 laser diodes representing JDSU’s new generation of very efficient high power broad area 9xx nm lasers.

Toby Strite, manager of JDSU’s High Power Laser Diode Marketing, will participate in a Diode Laser Reliability panel discussion on Tuesday, January 24 between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. PST in room J. Strite’s contribution is entitled “Determination of Single-Emitter Diode Laser Lifetime Using a Multicell Life Test Approach.”

Loren Eyres, senior optical engineer with JDSU’s Laser Products Group, will present “Advances in High Power Harmonic Generation.” Eyres’ talk is scheduled for Session 10 (9:10 to 10:20 a.m Pacific Time) on Wednesday, January 25. As part of this discussion, Eyres will present a recently developed, variable-pulse-width 532 nm laser with power output up to 40 Watts and pulse width electronically variable from 40 ns to 300 ns.  Eyres will also present data on a > 30 Watt 355 nm ultraviolet laser. Both lasers are intended for electronic materials processing applications, such as cutting, drilling and singulation. 

JDSU’s Commercial Laser Products

At its booth (number 1621), JDSU is showcasing a large portfolio of laser technologies offering unparalleled precision for use in semiconductors inspection, electronic material processing, bio-instrumentation, precision machining and more:

• The newly available IDL 100 Industrial Diode Laser System offers a breakthrough laser architecture that leverages JDSU’s telecom-class, single-emitter, L3 diode lasers, heralding a new standard in power, life expectancy, reliability and beam uniformity. The IDL family is used widely in selective laser soldering and plastic welding. The 100 watt version is expected to enable plastic welding of components with high glass content, parts with low absorption, and/or allow for greater production throughput.
• The 8000 Series Pump Box integrates JDSU’s telecom-class, single-emitter, L3 diode lasers into a compact, easy to use module featuring a single fiber pigtail, standard electrical connections, and simple cooling. The 8000 Series solution provides OEM customers access to state-of-the art L3 diode lasers, while relieving them of diode laser handling, thermal management and supply chain logistics challenges. Customers are free to focus on core fiber laser, plastic welding and/or medical systems-level design.
• The JDSU Xcyte® 355 is a high power laser ideal for 355 nm flow cytometry and semiconductor wafer inspection applications.   
• A technology demonstration of JDSU’s Q302E High Power Q-Switched Diode-Pumped 355 nm Laser. This latest member of the Q-series family delivers 50 percent more power in the same reliable package that is common to all Q series lasers. Q series lasers are distinguished by their unsurpassed stability combined with system lifetimes that lead the industry. The lasers are ideal for high throughput precision micromachining of semiconductor materials.
• JDSU will present a technology demonstration of its QSi Series, next-generation DPSS Q-Switched 355 nm > 1 W at 100 kHz class pre-production lasers. These lasers provide best-in-class precision for demanding 24x7 advanced high performance industrial applications. The QSi Series extends the industry proven superior pulse stability and field reliability of the M110 infrared laser to the ultraviolet, high repetition rate regime.
• Fiber Lasers – JDSU offers high quality fiber lasers for marking applications and precision machining.
• CW DPSS Lasers -- JDSU is a major supplier of 532 nm green DPSS lasers for applications ranging from biotechnology to semiconductor instrumentation. JDSU’s low power (10-50 mW) 532 nm lasers will be available at the booth.  

High Precision Optical Coatings
JDSU’s Optics & Display business offers precision without compromise with the Ucp-1 optical coating platform, a general purpose system for coating products in the visible and near-IR regions of the optical spectrum. A wide variety of application targets includes digital imaging, projection displays and custom optics. Ucp-1 offers speed, tight spectral control, lower defect levels, and pricing in line with consumer electronics.

Photonic Power
JDSU staff will be on hand to explain Photonic Power, an innovative power delivery system whereby light from a laser source illuminates a highly efficient photovoltaic power converter to produce electrical power. Photonic Power replaces copper and batteries for remote sensors, coaxial cable in wireless applications, and oil or gas-filled measurement transformers in high voltage applications.
