Optical Leader Ships 10,000th ROADM -- Building Block for the Agile Optical Network
MILPITAS, Calif., December 5, 2006 – JDSU, the leading enabler of broadband and optical innovation, marks a major milestone today with the shipment of its 10,000th ROADM. ROADMs, or reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers, are one of the key network elements that make it possible for operators to add capacity and flexibility to their network in order to deliver on-demand services to consumers. Video on-demand, IPTV, online gaming and other rich media services are just a few of the applications enabled by ROADMs.
“To put this in perspective, it represents the majority of overall ROADM deployment and the significant role ROADMs play in helping service providers build agile optical networks,” said Daryl Inniss, vice president, Communications Components, for Ovum-RHK. “ROADMs are able to address the rapidly growing need for optical networking modules that enable greater service delivery and network flexibility.”
Bandwidth and traffic patterns have become increasingly unpredictable as on-demand applications have become more prevalent, making effective traffic planning very difficult. As bandwidth-hungry applications are developed and adopted, service providers and multiservice operators (MSOs) are turning to Agile Optical Network (AON) to help them quickly and cost-effectively add capacity and flexibility to roll out new services and provide a seamless experience to their customers.
ROADMs, being remotely reconfigurable, allow the service providers to benefit from fewer truck rolls and lower operating cost by enabling “point and click” optical bandwidth management. Each of the 10,000 ROADMs shipped by JDSU is capable of carrying and dynamically switching 1.6Terabits worth of traffic (40x40Gb/s).
According to Ovum-RHK, the number of ROADM unit shipments is expected to grow by over 40 percent between 2005 and 2009.
“Greater network agility is a key requirement for our customers,” said Uwe Fischer, Vice President Business Management for Optical Transport of Siemens Networks. “The reality of the on-demand era we are in today is that our customers need to not only cost-effectively simplify network management but also increase their speed of service delivery. JDSU’s ROADM milestone is significant because it is a proof-point that multimedia applications are driving the change in network architecture today.”
“JDSU is the only company that has all three of the leading ROADM technologies - liquid crystal, MEMS and PLC -- and has a broad portfolio covering metro to long-haul networks, which gives us a strong competitive advantage that we pass along to our customers,” said Mike Ricci, senior vice president of JDSU’s optical communications group. “The proliferation of bandwidth hungry applications is driving the rapid deployment of ROADMs and JDSU is well positioned to meet the needs of innovative network providers servicing the on-demand era.”
JDSU has made the most headway in developing and delivering ROADMs because of its strong IP and technology portfolio; the company’s ROADMs already have been widely deployed and are carrying live traffic in Tier One networks.
