2495-L3 Series 808 nm Diode Laser Incorporates New Chip Technology to Provide Economical Solution for Industrial, Dental and Medical Applications
Milpitas, California, August 13, 2007 - JDSU, a leading enabler of broadband and optical innovation, today announced the general availability of its 2495-L3 Series 808 nanometer (nm) fiber-coupled diode laser. The diode laser incorporates new chip technology to provide a reliable and less expensive laser solution for many industrial, dental and medical applications. It generates twice the power of previous offerings and provides the highest level of 808 nm brightness among single-emitter fiber coupled diode lasers available in today's marketplace.
"As the diode laser industry has matured, JDSU has leveraged its expertise in the telecom space and applied it to the industrial sector, bringing higher performance and lower cost diode laser solutions to the market," said Alex Schoenfelder, vice president and general manager of JDSU's Integrated Photonics business unit. "The 2495-L3 Series not only provides a more elegant offering for high-precision laser applications, it also opens the door for JDSU to participate in new markets."
Industrial Advantages For industrial applications, the 2495-L3 diode laser optically pumps Nd-doped material to generate a 1064 nm output. The 1064 nm beam is used directly, or converted to green and UV laser light through harmonic conversion. These wavelengths are used for material processing applications such as scribing or cutting semiconductor materials.
The 2495-L3 diode laser provides a brighter, more reliable optical pumping alternative to conventional multi-emitter (bar) diode lasers. In a typical configuration, several 2495-L3 devices with 4W fiber output are bundled together to provide power equal to a conventional bar. This arrangement provides much higher power per single fiber and the distributed architecture prevents a single point of failure compared to bar solutions.
Dental and Medical Benefits There is also growing demand for the use of 808 nm diode lasers in the dental and medical fields. For example, Japan has certified this wavelength as the approved frequency for specific procedures.
For soft tissue dental processes, the 2495-L3 diode laser allows a dentist to more accurately treat diseased gum tissue without disturbing surrounding healthy tissue. In the therapeutic medical area of bio-stimulation, the 2495-L3 diode laser provides localized heat to stimulate damaged muscle tissue to relieve pain and discomfort.
