JDSU Introduces New Ethernet Test Features for LTE and Backhaul Technologies to Improve Quality of High-Bandwidth Services such as 4G Mobile and Video over IP
Greatly Reduces Operational Expenses and Accelerates Deployment Schedule for LTE and IP Video Deployments
JDSU introduces two new additions to its Ethernet test capabilities – network timing and frequency synchronization – that will provide crucial visibility into service provider networks to identify potential mobile service performance-affecting issues in the network before they impact subscribers. Operators traditionally use TDM or GPS technologies for synchronization applications. Emerging Ethernet technologies tested by JDSU allow operators to significantly reduce their backhaul operational expenses and simplify their LTE and IP video network design by eliminating the need for TDM/GPS.
Specifically, JDSU now offers analysis and generation of packet synchronization protocols (Precision Time Protocol (PTP)/IEEE 1588v2 and Synchronous Ethernet) for its T-BERD®/MTS-6000A and T-BERD®/MTS-8000 Multi-Services Application Module (MSAM), further helping providers to transition to Packet-based Transport Networks (PTN). See also “JDSU announces MPLS-TP features.”
Critical network timing and frequency synchronization functions give service providers the capability to analyze these emerging protocols, resulting in greatly reduced expenses for mobile backhaul and LTE by eliminating the need for TDM/GPS.
Summary of new features: Available as a software upgrade, these options verify the suitability of Ethernet links for the transfer of PTP protocols by connecting to a PTP master and measuring critical packet parameters with simultaneous generation of background traffic. The Synchronous Ethernet function recovers timing of an incoming Ethernet interface for tester’s transmitter. Using T-BERD®/MTS-6000A and T-BERD®/MTS-8000 Multi-Services Application Module (MSAM) Capture/Decode option, the PTP and Ethernet Synchronization Messaging Channel (ESMC) messages can be captured and decoded thereby allowing vendors and operators to verify and troubleshoot proper configuration and operation of synchronization networks.
Highlights of the new PTP and Synchronous Ethernet feature include:
- Generates and analyzes PTP messages as a master or a slave
- Measures Packet Loss, Packet Delay, and Packet Delay Variation on PTP links with simultaneous generation of background traffic
- Recovers timing of an incoming Synchronous Ethernet link and delivers it as a reference for tester’s transmitter
- Analyses Ethernet Synchronous Messaging Channel (ESMC) messages
- Captures and decodes PTP and ESMC messages
The JDSU T-BERD MTS-6000A MSAM is the most compact 10 G multifunction tester for the installation and maintenance of next-generation Carrier Ethernet and IP services. It offers field applications for servicing metro core telecommunications networks, wireless/cable switch centers, backhaul networks, and telecommunications and network equipment.
