San Jose, California, February 15, 2006 – JDSU today announced the release of a new module for its T-BERD and MTS-8000 platform that helps carriers efficiently deliver data services, including those transmitted by CWDM, a key enabler for many telecommunications carriers introducing triple-play services. The module design is the first of its kind to incorporate three unique test processes without disengaging from the fiber being analyzed. This further enables service providers to rapidly, reliably and cost-effectively deploy all metro network services in one convenient package, the T-BERD and MTS-8000. Also an element of JDSU’s T&M solutions for the Agile Optical Network (AON), the module gives network operators independent visibility into network configurations at the wavelength and data services level and simplifies installation and maintenance. The product will be on display at OFC/NFOEC 2006 in Anaheim, California, March 5-10 (JDSU booth #2323).
The new functions include polarization mode dispersion (PMD), the analytic process that is at the heart of fiber characterization and helps carriers identify fibers with a greater capacity than others to carry data. PMD enables the additional features available in the module, spectral attenuation profile (AP) and CWDM and DWDM channel analysis capabilities. This innovative, all-in-one design, already proven and in service with the MTS-5100 for metro network testing, combines PMD, AP and xWDM analysis – thereby enabling CWDM and DWDM service provisioning without having to disconnect the fiber under test. By integrating these functions in one half-slot size plug-in module, the TB/MTS-8000 provides carriers with a powerful but easy-to-use test set in a very small, compact and lightweight solution. Test methods other than JDSU’s require a more expensive solution using multiple pieces of equipment to meet the same need, and most of them cannot be used at the same time.
The JDSU method for PMD measurements is internationally recognized by all major standards bodies, including ITU G.650.2, IEC 60793-1-48, and EIA/TIA 455 FOTP-113.
“CWDM transmission is becoming a key delivery system for triple-play services due to its inherent ability to drive cost savings,” said Enzo di Luigi, general manager of JDSU’s fiber optics Test and Measurement group. “The JDSU T-BERD/MTS-8000 not only enables CWDM, but also DWDM and PMD, providing a truly all-in-one solution that is both capex- and opex-friendly.”
About JDSU’s T-BERD/MTS Optical Testers
Combining multiple test capabilities with unprecedented levels of field modularity, JDSU's T-BERD/MTS-8000 is a scalable field platform for provisioning and maintaining short-haul, long-haul, FTTx, Metro, CWDM, transport, data and DWDM networks. Advanced modularity enables the T-BERD/MTS-8000 to integrate options for video microscope, VFL, light source, power meter, and optical talk set with application modules for SONET, SDH, Ethernet, multi-mode and single mode OTDRs, PMD, spectral attenuation, CD, WDM, and single-port and dual-port OSA. Compatibility with more than 10,000 field-proven units already deployed worldwide by every major telecommunications network operator enables easy migration to new network technologies while continuing to reduce expenses.
Available on the T-BERD/MTS-8000 platform is a Transport module that is the first integrated field solution for Ethernet, SONET, SDH, PDH and T-carrier networks. By integrating these technologies in one module, network operators can invest in an all-in-one product that enables the efficient turn up of revenue generating services with one portable instrument. The Module also continues the heritage of the T-BERD and MTS-8000 product line as the industry’s most compact and cost-effective solution for optical network testing by combining test capability for 1.5Mb/s to 10Gb/s transmission services in an all-in-one product weighing less than 15 pounds/seven kilograms.
The T-BERD/MTS-8000 was released globally in October 2003 as the MTS-8000.
