Ottawa, Canada and San Jose, California – March 11, 2002 – JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced its Dynamic Gain Equalizer (DGE) which optimizes amplifier performance, thereby offering significant savings potential for 10 Gb/s ultra-long haul and 40 Gb/s long haul fiberoptic communications networks. The improved system performance provided by the DGE extends the signal reach obtained through the use of amplifiers, thereby increasing the distance between (and reducing the need for) costly regeneration equipment. The DGE helps to optimize fiberoptic system performance by compensating for uneven gain provided by optical amplifiers across the various wavelengths. Methods of fixed compensation using gain flattening filters do not address gain tilt and can exhibit large residual ripple, both of which can be compounded to unacceptable levels in a cascaded chain of amplifiers. In contrast, the DGE, which has an attenuation resolution of 0.1 dB, provides dynamic compensation that eliminates those imperfections.
The key feature of the DGE is that it simultaneously provides a smooth optical attenuation profile of wavelengths (low wavelength resolution) and compensates for local spectral features (high wavelength resolution). This feature differentiates the DGE from similar products that are not as effective at modifying the attenuation of one part of the spectrum without compromising the other portions of the profile. The wavelength resolution of the DGE is 2.6 nanometers.
For optical systems that are designed to offer increased flexibility and wavelength management, the DGE can be reconfigured remotely to respond to changes in gain profiles that occur in a dynamic network.
Another way that the DGE can be used to improve system performance is to configure a spectral profile that is optimized for a specific design such as in the case of Raman amplification. In addition, DGE compensates for performance variations over the life of the system or as a result of operating conditions such as changes in temperature or aging of components.
The DGE module includes a circuit card assembly that can be connected directly to a system motherboard, reducing the integration required by the system manufacturer. To reconfigure, the desired attenuation profile is sent electronically via a digital interface.
