OFC, Los Angeles, California – February 24, 2004 – JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today, at the fiberoptic components industry’s leading event, the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference 2004, showcased new products and technologies, including industry-leading tunable, reconfigurable and more highly integrated products to meet changing network and customer needs for more cost-effective solutions.
Industry-leading products JDS Uniphase is introducing include the first integrated fully tunable laser modulator (TLM) and the first widely available 4 Gb/s small form factor transceivers (see separate product news releases).
JDS Uniphase is also previewing innovative new products not yet generally available for order, including Receive Optical Sub-Assemblies (ROSAs) and Transmit Optical Sub-Assemblies (TOSAs) for use in smaller transceiver and transponder designs. The ROSAs and TOSAs are low cost, a fraction of the size of previous models and have receptacle optics for simple plug-in assembly. The company will also preview the first Planar Lightwave Circuit-based integrated Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Module (ROADM) as well as the MEMS-based multi-port wavelength switch, a ROADM enabler.
With over 200 product lines, JDS Uniphase has the industry’s broadest product portfolio of optical solutions. However the Company continues to develop new products to meet their customers’ changing needs. In addition to the new 1x-4x Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet transceivers mentioned above, JDS Uniphase is also displaying several other transceivers and transponders. These include a new small form factor pluggable (SFP) model for Gigabit Ethernet data communications applications for reaches up to 80 km. For 10 Gigabit Ethernet applications, an XFP-compliant long reach model and an X2-compliant model will be previewed.
For telecommunications applications at 10 Gb/s, the new PH1 Series and PM1 Series 300-pin transponders (announced November 2003) will be shown along with a preview of tunable PM1 Series models and the multi-rate short-reach XFP-compliant transceiver. For 2.5 Gb/s applications, the company is showing the new CT2 Series SFP transceiver for intermediate reach, coarse wavelength division multiplexing applications, and plans a long reach version of this model. An additional CT2 Series model is planned to meet the new dense wavelength division multiplexing long reach multi-source agreement (MSA) requirements.
Other new products being shown at OFC include both the ERM 528 10 Gb/s APD receiver which offers high dynamic range through the integration of a variable optical attenuator as well as the MSA-compliant small form factor ERM 578 micro APD receiver. The new OA 450 erbium doped fiber amplifier for metro and long haul applications and the new Optical Channel Monitor (OCM) announced February 9, 2004 (see separate release for details) are also being shown.
JDS Uniphase provides additional value to customers through device integration and the addition of embedded module intelligence. JDS Uniphase is also demonstrating its most highly vertically integrated subsystem capabilities with circuit packs and rack mounted intelligent modules. Examples of this capability are the new WaveReady products (announced December 2003), which offer carrier class metro solutions for fiber exhaust, reach extension and protection. Instrumentation products being shown at OFC include the SGRM series optical matrix switch for applications in which a traditional MxN port split is either unknown or may change as the system changes.
