Ottawa, Ontario and San Jose, Calif. - February 12, 2001 - JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq:JDSU and TSE:JDU) today reported the completion of a major milestone in its global systems integration program. This accomplishment was capped with the launch of standardized business processes running on Oracle applications for its Ottawa operations-its single largest business and manufacturing site. It is expected that improved customer service, supply chain management and manufacturing execution will be enabled by using common data formats for products, customers, and suppliers within a single enterprise resource planning (ERP) application suite across all JDS Uniphase business units. This common foundation is critical to maximizing the synergies within and across business units and enables the rapid integration of future acquisitions as well.
Ottawa represented the fifteenth site implementation of Oracle enterprise management systems since the first phase of the project was launched in January 2000. In addition to Ottawa, recently implemented sites include JDS Uniphase operations in West Trenton, New Jersey; Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; Eindhoven, the Netherlands; and Witney, United Kingdom. With this implementation over 75% of the company's operations are running on the global system.
"Today we have completed another major step in the integration of JDS Uniphase," stated Joe Riera, JDS Uniphase VP and Chief Information Officer. "The business units that were part of the company at the beginning of 2000 are now unified on standard business processes using a common system. We have learned much over the last year through these implementations that will help us integrate additional business units in a timely fashion to more seamlessly serve our customers."
To achieve this integration, the JDS Uniphase IT organization pursued an application service provider (ASP) supported, single application strategy based on common best-practice operating processes. A rapid deployment program was launched in partnership with KPMG Consulting to migrate existing business units and acquisitions onto this standard operating model. This ERP initiative is one element of a global e-business driven IT strategy that includes an integrated web-based engineering data management system to automate product development processes, and online web-based order information access at http://www.jdsuniphase.com/.
"We have demonstrated the power of an ASP supported, web-based solution running on a high-speed Internet backbone for managing a global operation," added Paul Brinkley, JDS Uniphase director of IT applications and eBusiness. "We believe this flexible architecture will allow us to move with great speed to migrate from legacy systems to a new technical infrastructure at the lowest possible cost to the business."
