Nepean, Canada and San Jose, California - January 23, 2001 - JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) received Photonics Spectra magazine's "Circle of Excellence" Award for the MicroPac™ compact spectrometer produced by the company's OCLI Group. The 2000 Photonics Circle of Excellence Awards honor the most innovative products for the photonics marketplace and were presented this year at the Photonics West Exhibition in San Jose, California. Winners of the award are selected by the magazine's editorial advisory board, a distinguished group of experts in their fields, after a careful assessment of a product's excellence, innovation and achievement.
The MicroPac spectrometer is unique in being the first compact spectrometer that does not depend upon grating technology. With JDS Uniphase's Selectraband™ Linear Variable Filter (LVF) that lies at the heart of the device, the MicroPac compact spectrometer introduces a new class of spectrometers that allows customers to build a variety of instruments around this small engine.
Developed to open up fields that have been closed to conventional methods, the MicroPac spectrometer offers features that grating-based spectrometers have been unable to provide: compactness of size (36 mm x 16 mm), extreme ruggedness, and thermal and temporal stability. In addition, LVF technology has the advantage of scalability, making the MicroPac spectrometer a cost-effective alternative to grating-based instruments. As a result, and with the further cost reductions of detector arrays, the MicroPac compact spectrometer is expected to significantly reduce spectroscopy costs and open new markets to spectroscopic devices.
