ECOC, Amsterdam, October 1, 2001—JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced its Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) modules for fiberoptic communications systems. Priced to meet the cost requirements of the metro market at under $2,000 in volume, the SOA module can be deployed for multiple applications throughout the network, including switching, in-line amplification, booster applications and pre-amplification.
Most amplifiers are designed to deliver the performance needed for long-haul applications, whereas metro does not require as much performance and therefore can use a less costly solution. JDS Uniphase’s SOA modules, based on reliable semiconductor chip technology, are the size of a standard 14-pin butterfly package.
Performance
JDS Uniphase's SOA module operates over the entire C-band and is available in a polarization independent (CQF872 Series) and polarization maintaining (CQF871 Series) module. The gain is 20 dB and 16 dB respectively (typical). The saturation output power for both modules is 10 dBm (typical). The polarization dependent gain is 1 dB (typical) for the polarization independent module. The polarization maintining CQF871 SOA module includes two optical isolators integrated within the package.
Applications
This SOA module can be used for in-line amplification to compensate for losses due to components in the optical path, and for pre-amplification to improve signal reception. It can also be used as a very quick-responding (nanoseconds) switch. A polarization-maintaining version is available for transmission booster applications. The SOA module can be used for both single channel and WDM applications.
Pricing and Availability
JDS Unphase’s SOA modules are now available. Lead-time for evaluation samples is 1-2 weeks after receipt of order and larger quantities are available 6-8 weeks after receipt of order. The polarization maintaining CQF871 and the polarization independent CQF872 are priced at less than $2,000 each when ordered in volume. For more information, contact your JDS Uniphase representative.
