Anaheim, Calif., Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) – March 19, 2002 – JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced new products and technology developments which are being shown working together in the largest live interactive demonstration of components and modules at the fiberoptic components industry’s leading event, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC).
At OFC, JDS Uniphase is introducing or previewing future technology in nearly every area of its product portfolio, which extends from the enterprise to the ultra long haul markets. Significant announcements range from major improvements in core technology to new component design and new, fully integrated modules. There are also several new products from the JDS Uniphase Instruments Group and several multi-source agreements (MSAs) resulting from cooperative industry efforts.
“Our passion for partnering with our customers is strengthened in these challenging times,” said Jozef Straus, co-chairman, president and chief executive officer of JDS Uniphase. “This passion drives our continued innovation in developing the solutions our customers need now and in the future. With our commanding product breadth and depth of technology, we are focused on developing the solutions that meet the economics of today's systems and the technical requirements for the next generation."
JDS Uniphase’s new products and technology advancements target lower costs for system manufacturers by providing higher levels of integration and extending signal reach which reduces the need for electrical regeneration. These products also enable next generation flexible, remote, dynamically reconfigurable systems. In addition, developments for next generation applications, such as those required for systems operating at higher data rates, is also being demonstrated.
The Company’s fiberoptic communication products are organized at OFC and on their recently redesigned web site by product application category: Transmission, PMD/CD Compensation, Mux/Demux, Add/Drop, Amplification, Optical Monitoring, Switching, Coupling/Splitting. Instrumentation products are grouped separately, as they are on the web. Highlights at OFC include:
Switching
The first in a family of products representing breakthrough technology that enables all-optical switching and remote wavelength selection in milliseconds is the new Wavelength Blocker, announced March 5. The next product in that family, the four port Wavelength Switch is being previewed and is included in the live demo. The VCF, a filter that is tunable over the entire C or L band at 100 and 200 GHz is now available at 50 GHz.
Amplifiers
The OA Series, announced in February, is the broadest selection of standard EDFAs in the industry and is being expanded with the new, smaller OA 400 which conforms to industry standard specifications and an even smaller OA model is being previewed. For Raman applications, the Raman Pump Unit, which includes a digital interface, is being introduced.
JDS Uniphase is announcing thin film filter (TFF) coating technology advancements that have allowed dramatically lower insertion loss and ripple for wideband products. A new multiplexer for use with amplifiers that uses the ultra-uniform TFF will begin shipping in March.
New designs and methods of manufacture are now being used for micro-optic products (isolators, filter WDMs, thin film GFFs and integrated components) that provide better performance in high power applications while reducing costs. Other new components for high power include fused fiber polarization maintaining combiners, which have been tested to 4 W of power.
The Dynamic Gain Equalizer announced March 11th optimizes amplifier system performance and can be remotely reconfigured.
Transmission
New source lasers, receivers and transponders being introduced at OFC include: temperature tunable DMLs for 2.5 Gb/s (announced in January); 40 mW and 50 mW high power and 4x50 temperature tunable CW lasers. A quarter C-band temperature tunable laser and an EML laser with integrated electronic driver will be available soon and are being previewed at OFC.
For data communications in the enterprise market, the 10 Gb/s Xenpak transponder is being previewed in the exhibit. JDS Uniphase is now providing products for the growing data communications market including small form factor (SFF) transceivers and Gigabit Interface Converters (GBIC) for storage area networks (SAN) and local area networks (LAN) using optical Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet protocols.
New 2.5 Gb/s transponders are being introduced for up to 180 km and in 2-channel temperature tunable and multi-rate DWDM models. Also being announced is a 10 Gb/s receiver with integrated transimpedance limiting amplifier that helps system designers reduce space and cost.
Optical Monitoring
The Gain Equalization Monitor (announced March 12) accurately measures optical power and wavelength and is JDS Uniphase’s smallest and lowest cost addition to its family of optical monitoring solutions.
PMD/CD compensation
A chromatic dispersion compensation module prototype is included in the live demo at 10 Gb/s. A polarization mode compensation module prototype is included and working live in the 40 Gb/s demo.
Mux/Demux
New mux/demux products such as the industry’s first colorless arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) that can be used in any color band reduce costs by simplifying logistics and spare part inventories. Other new AWG products include a low-loss (< 3dB IL) AWG and a unique design that combines two AWGs in one package, saving space and reducing power consumption by up to 25%.
Add/Drop
The Wavelength Blocker mentioned in Switching, above, allows the selection of any or all wavelengths in the C or L band for use in add/drop applications. JDS Uniphase is also introducing fiber Bragg grating add/drop modules available for the entire C and L band in 100, 50, and 25 GHz .
Coupling/Splitting
New products for coupling/splitting include waveguide splitter, tap couplers and polarization maintaining splitters for C and L band, a 1x24 waveguide splitter for FSAN (Full Service Access Network) and CATV, and waveguide splitter modules that are available in a variety of vertical cassettes or rack mountable shelves for FSAN, CATV, C and L. Also being introduced is a fused fiber, dual band optical network splitter.
Multiple Source Agreements (MSAs)
JDS Uniphase has joined other suppliers to provide products that have common physical, interface and performance specifications to ease integration and design for systems providers. These efforts have led to MSAs for the following products: Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers, 980 pump lasers and 10 Gb/s data communication transponders.
Instruments
JDS Uniphase Instrumentation Group is extending the functionality of its Multiple Application Platform (MAP) with five new cassettes. New capabilities added to the RX3 Series Mulitchannel Backreflection Meters include three-laser wavelength testing and 10 mm InGaAs detector. Also being introduced is the benchtop 10 Gb/s Optical Transmitter for use in the emerging 10GbE 1310 nm data communications market.
Demo
JDS Uniphase will show new and prototype products working together in a live demonstration at OFC. The 10 Gb/s, L-band, 50 GHz demo is dynamic and interactive. Visitors can add/drop channels, add/fix dispersion and make other adjustments. It includes a comb generator, FBG and TFF multiplexers and a self-compensating amplifier that uses the Dynamic Gain Equalizer. The Wavelength Blocker is used to provide channel by channel attenuation and the Wavelength Switch is used to provide dynamic, reconfigurable add/drop. Also included is a chromatic dispersion compensation module. SOAs are used to boost the signal before two different receivers (one with automatic gain control, the other with transimpedance limiting amplification). The 40 Gb/s portion of the demo includes a 40 Gb/s transponder and polarization mode dispersion module.
