San Jose, California – January 27, 2004 – JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today announced two new products at the Photonics West 2004 conference in San Jose, California that expand the company’s laser-related technology capabilities.
The company introduced the 6390-L3 Commercial High Power Pump Laser for Ytterbium based laser systems (disk, fiber), which enables users to employ an innovative, reliable distributed pumping technique, and the high power diode-pumped microchip crystal assembly, which includes one of the most efficient laser host crystal currently available.
JDS Uniphase also previewed new technology scheduled to be available later in the year including the Pulsed Fiber Laser Marking System, the Industrial Diode Laser, and a blue solid-state laser technology demonstration.
New 6390-L3 Commercial Laser
The 6390-L3 Commercial High Power Pump Laser is designed for laser manufacturers developing fiber and disk lasers for applications as diverse as auto body welding and semiconductor marking. Laser manufacturers can address reliability concerns by employing the 6390-L3 in an innovative distributed pumping architecture. Distributed pumping enables predictable lifetimes and scheduled maintenance, rather than system failures. The 6390-L3 is available now.
New High Power Diode-Pumped Microchip (DPM) Crystal Assembly
The high power DPM crystal assembly consists of Neodymium Doped Yttrium Orthvanadate (Nd:YVO4) and Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTiOPO4 or KTP) crystals. This new type of DPM crystal assembly is designed for higher power diode-pumped green lasers and generates higher green laser output power. The typical pump power required is 350-500 mW and the 532 nm (beam mode TEM00) green output power can reach 30-80 mW with power stability of 6%.
Pulsed Fiber Laser Marking System
The Pulsed Fiber Laser Marking System is expected be the smallest footprint laser-based marking system available supporting a wide variety of marking applications. The Pulsed Fiber Laser Marking System allows a wider variety of materials to be permanently marked and semiconductors can be marked with a higher contrast than previously available. This complete, air-cooled, environmentally sealed system can easily be integrated into existing operations and provides thousands of maintenance free hours of high-speed marking. Both 9 W and 18 W models of the Pulsed Fiber Laser Marking System are expected to be available in Spring 2004.
Industrial Diode Laser System
The Industrial Diode Laser System is a single, complete package that includes a highly reliable, fiber delivery, and a red pointing diode laser with a heat sink, power supply and control electronics. The compact turnkey laser system also features multiple InGaAs single emitter diodes, which give users longer laser life than bar diode-based lasers. This is critical in many applications, such as soldering and plastic welding, where lasers must be turned on and off regularly. In addition, the Industrial Diode Laser System provides up to 50 watts of multi-mode laser output. The Industrial Diode Laser System is expected to be available in Spring 2004.
Blue Solid-State Laser Technology Demonstration
JDS Uniphase also demonstrated its new blue solid-state technology designed to be an easy and cost-effective transition from blue argon gas lasers. The demonstration utilizes fiber-coupled technology and is expected to be available in 10 mW and 20 mW models in late Spring 2004.
