10 Gb/s Dual Drive Modulator for NRZ and RZ; 2.5 - 10 Gb/s Modulator Driver Use Less Power
ECOC, Amsterdam, October 1, 2001—JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced a high performance modulator and modulator driver that can reduce power demand by 50% compared to most currently available products. The 10 Gb/s Dual Drive Modulator can be used for NRZ and has enough bandwidth for electrical RZ systems. The H302 Optical Modulator Driver is designed for single-drive lithium niobate optical modulators and requires only 2.5 watts of power. The heat generated from power-consuming devices is a significant obstacle for system designers. The heat must be dissipated or higher temperatures will degrade performance and can cause failure. Heat dissipation and cooling products are bulky, expensive, and require additional power – often more than the components they cool. More efficient products, such as the new 10 Gb/s Dual Drive Modulator and the H302 Optical Modulator Driver help simplify designs and reduce costs.
10 Gb/s Dual Drive Modulators
The 10Gb/s Dual Drive Modulator is a high performance modulator for long haul and ultra long haul applications. Its enhanced bandwidth of 12-16 GHz is sufficient for the trend toward electrical RZ systems for ultra long haul. When used in NRZ long haul applications, the high bandwidth will accommodate forward error correction (FEC). The dual drive design requires less than 3 volts of drive voltage, much lower than the 5-6 volts required by single drive modulators. Because of the low voltage, IC-based drivers can be used, which are much smaller, less costly, and use less power than discrete electronic drivers. The 10Gb/s Dual Drive Modulator is integrated with a tap/photodiode that is capable of both bias control and optical power monitoring. Integrating these components reduces costs and space requirements.
H302 Optical Modulator Driver
JDS Uniphase’s H302 Optical Modulator Driver is designed for use with single-ended drive lithium-niobate modulators in 2.5 through 10 Gb/s applications. An IC-based design, the H302 is more efficient, smaller and less costly than solutions based on discrete components. The H302 is developed with the latest generation of Traveling Wave Amplifiers (TWAs) implemented in Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuits (MMICs) and requires only 2.5 watts of power. This is a significant reduction compared to 5 watts consumed by earlier second-generation drivers using older MMICs with efficient RF decoupling inductors, and 8-10 watts consumed by even earlier first generation drivers used with inefficient RF decoupling inductors. Applications for the H302 include transmitter cards and transponders for long haul and metro applications. The H302 can also be used for test equipment applications where limiting (compression) is permitted, and linear characteristics are not required. This new modulator has options for built-in automatic gain control with gain variation within 0.15 dB.
