Added Intelligence Simplifies System Design Ottawa, Canada and San Jose, California – March 19, 2002 – JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced its digitally controlled Raman Pump Unit (RPU) for long haul and ultra long haul DWDM systems. The RPU includes a digital control interface to reduce design and integration time that is typically required of systems manufacturers. The Raman Pump Unit is the key technology for Raman amplification. By utilizing the transmission fiber as the gain medium, Raman amplification can reduce noise accumulation in the transmission signal and allow for longer reach spans. Raman technology will initially be used in 10- and 40-Gb/s systems as an enhancement to Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA)-based chains to reduce the number of electrical regeneration and amplification points, which lowers overall system costs. System designs based exclusively on Raman for amplification are also envisioned. The new digital RPU utilizes JDS Uniphase optical components, including 14XX diode sources. Digital control is via an RS-232 interface. The RPU incorporates polarization and wavelength multiplexed laser diodes, an integrated pump/signal multiplexer and an optical output monitor. It has high power pump output of up to 550 milliwatts (mW), low insertion loss (0.8 dB typical), low degree of polarization dependent loss (0.1 dB maximum), ultra-low degree of polarization (<7.5%) and flat gain across the transmission band. JDS Uniphase has the industry’s broadest offering of amplification solutions including Raman pumps, customized and standard EDFAs and Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers.
