Low-cost, small form-factor EDFA in industry standard package Ottawa, Canada and San Jose, California – March 19, 2002 – JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced its OA 400 Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for use in DWDM telecommunications systems, further broadening its industry leading line of standard optical amplifiers. The OA 400 offers a low-cost alternative to today’s customized EDFAs in an industry standard, compact package (70 x 90 x 12 mm). The OA 400 is a single-stage, single-pump amplifier designed for boosting signal lasers, power equalization at the receiver or mid-span, or amplification in edge or access networks where gain flattening is not required. All key components for the OA 400 are internally manufactured to optimize for performance, reliability and costs. For example, by utilizing JDS Uniphase’s uncooled 980 nm pump lasers, the OA 400 can offer lower cost and improved performance through reduced power consumption requirements (up to 75% improvement versus EDFAs utilizing standard 980nm pump lasers). The OA 400 typically provides 24 dB small signal gain and 15 dBm saturated output power. The JDS Uniphase standard amplifier family now includes six amplifier options ranging from single channel, narrowband applications to wideband DWDM solutions, with and without control electronics. The modules of the OA Series combine different specification solutions—power and gain levels, gain flatness, and noise figure—to meet the most common amplification requirements. In addition to the OA series, JDS Uniphase offers Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers, Raman Amplifiers and custom EDFAs.
