NFOEC, Baltimore, July 9, 2001—JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) today announced the introduction of uncooled technology for its 980 nm pump modules—the SDLO-1100 Series—and an uncooled optical amplifier—the MicroAmp MA-C2. These products help fiberoptic system designers overcome the cost issues, design challenges, and heat dissipation requirements of their systems, which allows them to offer more functionality in smaller enclosures.
Most 980 nm pump lasers require thermal electric coolers (TECs) to maintain reliability and performance. TECs, however, add cost, complexity, and volume, and they significantly increase the overall power budget for most designs. The SDLO-1100 model uncooled pump module provides a high-power (200 mW) pump laser that does not require any active cooling. It also features fiber Bragg grating wavelength stabilization.
JDS Uniphase uses the SDLO-1100 uncooled pump in its new MicroAmp MA-C2 uncooled amplifier. The MicroAmp uncooled amplifier is designed for single wavelength or narrow band applications in DWDM systems, such as boosting signal lasers, power equalization at the receiver or mid-span, or in edge or access networks where gain flattening is not required. It provides up to 24 dB small signal gain and up to 15 dBm saturated output power. The uncooled design results in lower cost and reduced overall power consumption.
