OFC, Los Angeles, California - February 24, 2004 - JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ:  JDSU and TSX:  JDU) today announced general availability of the integrated Tunable Laser Modulator (TLM), the first fully tunable laser modulator in the industry.

Designed for long reach and long haul markets, the TLM is a high performance, reliable transmission source that combines the functions of five discrete optical components into a single module. Specifically, it incorporates a widely tunable source laser, 10 Gb/s lithium niobate modulator, wavelength locker, optional variable optical attenuator, and output power monitoring photodiode.

In addition to providing key functionality for next-generation dynamic, reconfigurable networks, the TLM offers size and cost savings potential for original equipment manufacturers’ increasingly dense system designs.  The TLM costs less and is smaller than the discrete components that would be needed to provide the same performance.  Also, using one product, the TLM, throughout the entire band of wavelengths can reduce procurement and inventory costs when compared to multiple fixed or partially tunable lasers required for the same range. 

The TLM is the industry’s first integrated laser modulator which is fully tunable over the entire C or L band. At the same time, the TLM also leverages other proven technologies. The distributed feedback laser array and the 10 Gb/s lithium niobate modulator used in the TLM are based on well understood, high performance technology, similar to that deployed in optical networks worldwide. The TLM offers modulated optical output greater than 4 dBm, eliminating the need for transmission pre-amplification.
