OFC, Los Angeles, California – February 24, 2004 - JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today announced general availability of new 4.25 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) Fibre Channel transceivers in both small form factor pluggable (SFP) and pin-through-hole (PTH) packages These modules are the first 4 Gb/s transceivers to ship widely to customers and are directed at network system developers of both 4.25 Gb/S Fibre Channel as well as Gigabit Ethernet applications.
As system developers look for alternatives to 2 Gb/s data link bottlenecks in storage arrays and networks, JDS Uniphase’s 4.25 Gb/s technology provides a cost effective solution that allows continued growth in the storage area network markets.
All of JDS Uniphase’s 4.25 Gb/s transceivers can be used with and without an external (rate select) control signal for 1x Fibre Channel, 2x Fibre Channel, 4x Fibre Channel or compatibility with Gigabit Ethernet optical signals. This allows customers to preserve their 2 Gb/s ASIC investment and implement 4.25 Gb/s quickly. The new transceivers also feature JDS Uniphase’s ergonomic latch design, which is suitable for any application, including next-generation densely packed port configurations.complete SFF8472 implementation, industry leading additional functions (JSH family).
The new pluggable and PTH models offer optional digital diagnostic monitoring. They have undergone significant testing with leading port cage, SERDES, and optical connector manufacturers to ensure smooth interoperability.
“Because we believed 4 Gb/s would be the next generation performance level for Fibre Channel storage networks, JDS Uniphase made a significant commitment to enable our customers’ rapid migration to this new technology” said Don Bossi, president of JDS Uniphase’s Transmission Products Group. “We chose to produce 4 Gb/s modules that support today’s and tomorrow’s networking speeds and applications.”
The new transceivers provide high-speed serial links at signaling rates up to 4.25 Gb/s for point-to-point links as well as Fibre Channel arbitrated loop (FC-AL) applications. They are compliant with the latest Fibre Channel specification, the SFF multi-source agreement, and the SFF 8472 Digital Diagnostic Monitoring specification, where applicable.
The new 4.25 Gb/s transceivers offer robust performance, including operating temperature from -15 C° up to 85 C° and +/- 10% voltage variation. In addition, the pluggable model includes surge protection for trouble-free insertion and removal from live systems. Customers also benefit from a long life design with an average failure rate of 0.01% per kilo-hour continuous operation or 100 FIT (failures in time).
Availability
The new transceivers are the JSH-42S4AA1, which is pluggable with diagnostics, JSM-42S4AA1, which is pluggable without diagnostics, the JSJ-42S4AR1, a PTH model with digital diagnostics, and the JSF-42S4AR1, a PTH model without digital diagnostics. All are available now for order from JDS Uniphase representatives worldwide and are expected to be in production in March.
