New, ultra-low loss wideband WDM to start shipping in March Ottawa, Canada and San Jose, California – March 19, 2002 – JDS Uniphase announced today significant improvements in thin film filter (TFF) manufacture that offer dramatically improved performance for wideband wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) products for fiberoptic communications. The new, ultra-low loss TFFs are being used in a 4-band wideband demultiplexer, used in optical amplifiers, that will start shipping in March. Wideband WDM’s are extensively used in ultra-long haul, long haul, and metro applications for band splitting, bi-directional splitting, and supervisory functions. The customized design of the modules enables their use in a wide range of optical networks covering the S-, C- and L-band plus Optical Supervisory Channels (OSC) outside the signal bands. Improvements in the TFF coating process has resulted in lower insertion loss and band ripple when used in these wideband WDM modules. Individual filter bandwidths of up to 36 nm can now be regularly produced with band ripple of less than 0.02 dB. A 4-band wideband demultiplexer (OSC+C+L+OSC) using the ultra-low loss TFFs has insertion loss less than 0.8 dB over temperature, a significant improvement compared to modules made with existing techniques with typical values up to 2 dB. Adjacent band isolation of greater than 25 dB is maintained, combined with band uniformity of less than 0.2 dB.
