XENPAK MSA-compliant transceiver exceeds industry standards
Ottawa, Canada and San Jose, California – September 4, 2002 – JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today expanded its Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel offerings for the data communications market with the announcement of its 10 GbE XENPAK, a 10 Gigabit Ethernet optical transceiver. The new transceiver meets IEEE 802.3ae and the XENPAK multi-sourcing agreement, the most widely adopted standards for this product category.
“Data communications and Gigabit Ethernet are in demand because campus operations, enterprises and global organizations have a continued need to upgrade their networks under increasing cost restraints,” said Don Bossi, President of JDS Uniphase’s Transmission Group. “Our product delivers superior performance by exceeding IEEE LAN-PHY specifications while conforming to XENPAK standards – which we believe is the best solution available for today’s 10 Gigabit Ethernet transceiver needs.”
Ethernet is one of the most widely adopted networking technologies. Much of the world’s data transfer begins and ends with an Ethernet connection. Ethernet applications are now expanding beyond LAN applications and there is demand for products that offer higher capacity while reducing the total cost of network connectivity and maintaining high levels of reliability.
XENPAK refers to a MSA that describes form, fit and function by providing mechanical, electrical and optical standards. XENPAK is supported by most of the leading vendors and is the most widely accepted design of 10 Gigabit Ethernet transceivers. JDS Uniphase’s 10 GbE XENPAK was proven in the world’s largest 10 Gigabit Ethernet interoperability demonstrations at this year’s Networld+Interop and Supercomm events. More about these demonstrations is available at http://www.10gea.org/ and more about the XENPAK standard is available at http://www.xenpak.org/.
Superior design and performance
The 10 GbE XENPAK uses an uncooled 1310 nm distributed feedback laser for data transmission over single-mode fiber at distances up to 10 km. It features a 4-bit XAUI hot-pluggable electrical interface, accepts an industry standard duplex SC optical connector and is designed and tested to 100% compliance with XENPAK and IEEE 802.3ae 10GBASE-LR specifications.
JDS Uniphase’s 10 GbE XENPAK transceivers draw only 4.2 W of power and when used at both ends of the link are guaranteed for distances of up to15 km, 50% more than the IEEE standard. In addition, fully compliant pairs of these transceivers have been successfully demonstrated at distances of up to 40 km.
The laser driver and receiver amplifier integrated circuits are JDS Uniphase’s proprietary analog designs and are fabricated using SiGe technology. EMI performance is certified to 8 dB below FCC class B (Residential), allowing multiple 10 GbE XENPAK transceivers to be installed on a single line card.
Applications
With 10 Gigabit backbones installed, companies will have the capability to begin providing Gigabit Ethernet service to workstations and, eventually, to the desktop in order to support applications such as streaming video, medical imaging, centralized applications, and high-end graphics.
Additionally, 10 Gigabit Ethernet will provide infrastructure for both network-attached storage (NAS) and storage area networks (SAN). Applications for Gigabit Ethernet in storage networks today include: business continuance/disaster recovery, remote backup, storage on demand and streaming media.
Availability
JDS Uniphase’s 10 GbE XENPAK Transceiver is available for order from JDS Uniphase representatives and distributors worldwide. Products have already been shipped and typical lead-time is 4-6 weeks after receipt of order.
