Nepean, Ontario, San Jose, Calif., and Santa Rosa, Calif., January 19, 2000- JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU) announced today that it has extended through December, 2001, a multi-year contract with Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) for the supply of advanced optical amplifier modules for Lucent's WaveStarâ„¢ OLS 400G optical networking system. This contract extension further strengthens JDS Uniphase's long-standing relationship as a key supplier to Lucent.
The optical amplifier modules covered by this agreement have been designed and developed to meet the specific requirements of Lucent's state-of-the-art system.
Lucent's WaveStar OLS 400G uses a technique known as dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM), which increases network capacity by simultaneously transmitting multiple wavelengths - or channels - of light across the same fiber strand. This 80-channel system can provide up to 400 gigabits per second (Gb/s) of transmission capacity over a single optical fiber.
Jozef Straus, Co-Chairman and President of JDS Uniphase commented: "We are very pleased to have been chosen by Lucent as a key partner in the development and supply of these optical amplifiers for Lucent's Wavestar OLS 400G system. JDS Uniphase has used its state-of-the-art amplifier technology and world-class fiberoptic engineering to develop an optical amplifier module able to meet the stringent performance specifications required for Lucent's optical networking system. This relationship provides JDS Uniphase with a significant opportunity to serve Lucent's future requirements."
Harry Bosco, president of Lucent's Optical Networking Group, added, "JDS Uniphase continues to be been an outstanding supplier of ours. Its amplifiers meet our very demanding performance requirements, and we are pleased to be able to extend our strategic relationship on this program."
