Multi-reach (SR2/IR2/LR2), multi-rate for SONET/SDH and Ethernet FEC
San Jose, California – November 17, 2003 – JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSX: JDU) today announced the PH1 Series and PM1 Series transponders, extending its family of products to provide all reaches and rates required for 10 Gb/s optical communication systems. The new, lower cost platforms are MSA-compliant, require less power and offer increased capabilities for telecommunications equipment manufactures for SONET/SDH or Ethernet applications in access, metro and core networks.
The PH1 Series is a cost effective, small form factor (SFF), 300-pin design for use in transport systems, switches, client-side interfaces, cross-connects and routers in metro and access markets. It is available in multiple reaches (SR2/IR2/LR2) and in multiple rates (up to 11.1 Gb/s) for SONET/SDH and Ethernet. It uses an electo-absorbtion modulated laser, which helps lower cost and meet the SFF package size of 2.2”x 3.0”x 0.53”. Its low power consumption, 4.0 W (typ) without jitter filter and 4.8 W (typ) with jitter filter, as well as its extremely low power consumption over extreme temperature and voltage conditions, also helps enable lower cost system designs.
The PM1 Series is a 300-pin design that uses a continuous wave laser and lithium niobate modulator to provide the high performance needed for LR2 line-side applications with fiber optic reaches up to 100 km in metro and core networks. Equipment manufactures have relied on customized, discrete designs for these applications, but are now using transponders in order to reduce cost. Its low power consumption, 5.3 W (typ) without jitter filter and 5.8 W (typ) with jitter filter, as well as its extremely low power consumption over extreme temperature and voltage conditions, also helps enable lower cost system designs.
The PM1 Series and PH1 Series use Digital Signal Processor (DSP) technology to provide MSA I2C (Edition 3 and Edition 4) monitoring and control. The I2C features can be selected via hardware, software or a combination. The DSP provides advanced capabilities over previous generation transponder modules and enables the implementation of unique customer configurations while facilitating future advanced features such as Electronic Dispersion Compensation.
Both the PH1 Series and PM1 Series are available in TDM and DWDM models. Both PIN and APD receivers are available with improved sensitivity.
Availability
The PH1 Series and the PM1 Series transponders are available for order from JDS Uniphase representatives worldwide. Pre-production shipments for sample orders began earlier this year. Production shipments are expected to begin this month.
