Munich, Germany - September 1, 2000—Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX), JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSE: JDU), Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT), and start-up company LightLogic today announced a Multiple Source Agreement (MSA) for common mechanical, electrical, and optical specifications for small-footprint OC-192 (10 Gb/s) SDH/SONET transponders in order to support the fast-growing optical networking market. These devices provide a space- and cost-saving optical-to-electrical conversion solution for local area networks to metropolitan networks that is four times faster than today's standard OC-48 (2.5 Gb/s) products.
Under the MSA, a full drop-in solution is specified, enabling customers to benefit from multiple sources. The new MSA specifies a 200-pin connector and pinout that provides customers with an electrical interface compliant with Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) specifications. The optical interface is defined to comply with draft ITU and Telcordia specifications for short and very short reach applications.
The transponder features integrated Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) and mux/demux for 16 electrical parallel (16:1) LVDS (Low Voltage-Differential Signal) channels at 622 Mb/s. This fully integrated solution allows customers to speed up their design cycle and save time and resources. The module features low power consumption due to the high level of integration. The device measures only 75 mm X 42 mm X 16 mm (= 3.0" x 1.7" x .63"), making it the smallest 10 Gb/s solution currently available.
The OC-192 transponders provide a serial 10 Gb/s optical data link in high-speed networking equipment such as routers, switches, add/drop multiplexers, and digital crossconnects. With a reach of 600 meters to 12 km, the low-cost, small-footprint transponders will support the fast-growing market for high-speed LAN, access, and metropolitan optical networking equipment.
