Westlake Village, CA and Tempe, AZ and San Jose, CA – September 30, 2003 – Advanced Digital Optics (ADO), Brillian Corporation (Nasdaq: BRLC), and OCLI, a wholly owned subsidiary of JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU and TSX: JDU), today announced that the companies have jointly developed a rear-projection television (RPTV) light engine based on Brillian’s LCoS® Gen II microdisplay panels and ADO’s UltreX-3™ color management kernel. The on-screen contrast ratio of the light engine with panels has reached 2500:1, exceeding the known contrast level achieved with any other liquid-crystal-on-silicon microdisplay technology. OCLI is the licensee of ADO’s UltreX technology and provides exclusive manufacturing, marketing, and sales support for the product line.
The high contrast ratio marks a new threshold of performance for liquid-crystal-on-silicon microdisplay technology applied to RPTV. Advantages of the UltreX-3 light engine, featuring Brillian’s LCoS® Gen II microdisplay panels, include high fill factor for vivid image reproduction without pixelation, rich color depth for high image fidelity, artifact-free video reproduction and the long lifetimes suitable for consumer applications.
“We believe the UltreX-3 light engine with Brillian panels offers contrast performance and uniformity levels that make the on-screen experience much more vibrant than competing technologies,” said Dr. Michael Newell, director of product development at ADO. “With this new level of performance, we expect to quickly set the standard for microdisplay-based light engines.”
“This new benchmark in high-performance liquid-crystal-on-silicon microdisplay engines further supports our belief that Brillian’s LCoS® is the microdisplay technology that will lead the next generation of high-end RPTV products,” said Rainer Kuhn, senior director of sales and marketing at Brillian. “By teaming with high-caliber optics organizations like ADO and OCLI, we are making it easier for RPTV product developers to get access to this technology quickly.”
“The consumer today is looking for large screen televisions that are higher performing, lighter weight and take up less space in the living room,” said Greg Miller, vice president and general manager of OCLI Products Division. “The UltreX-3 light engine offers cutting edge performance and helps enable television makers to meet these consumer demands.”
